Platinum Panda Coins
Main Characteristics
The Platinum
panda coin series is most representative of Chinese
platinum coins. From 1987 when the first platinum coin
was introduced to the close in 2005 of the last coin,
the platinum panda theme series is the only set that was
active from beginning to end, throughout the entire
period of platinum coin production.
The selected
platinum quality that was used from 1987 to 1990 had an
average weight of 1 ounce. In 1990, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10th
of an ounce appeared on a trial basis. Then nothing was
issued for the following two years. Since 1993 however,
only 1/10 and 1/20th of an ounce weight were
used and again issuance stopped in 1997. To commemorate
the "20th Anniversary of Chinese Panda Coins
Issue", under the advisement of the Chinese Coin
Corporation, the People's Bank of China once again
issued platinum coins in 2002. However due to the common
lack of knowledge among collectors at the time, many
people knew very little about the platinum panda coins.
As a result in 2005, any issuance was completely
terminated until today! Such simplicity in the
specification weight, viewed from another perspective,
sufficiently demonstrates the rarity and singular nature
of the platinum material.
The series of
platinum panda coins experienced significant
destruction. Almost every platinum set saw a number of
coins melted. As the time gap of this series is the
longest yet the highest quantity was produced, and in
addition the 1994 and 1995 1/20 ounce platinum panda are
quite rare, these have led to the endurance of the
platinum panda series as the core of the whole Chinese
platinum coin universe. |

For the longest time, the
Chinese people have favored the use of the name "white gold" to
"platinum". But in fact, white gold and platinum are two entirely
different concepts. Written on the early platinum coins in China, such
as the 1987 - 1990 platinum panda coins or the 1988 - 1999 platinum
Chinese zodiac coins, was "white gold" to mean "platinum". |
